For Which It Stands

Newsweek Review Dec 15, 2008 The Religious Case for Gay Marriage

If you have time to waste, please read the December 15, 2008 issue of Newsweek.  The article by Lisa Miller named, Gay Marriage Our Mutual Joy, is a real piece of work.  I am sure the neighboring community around Newsweek thought a landfill had opened when the stench of Millers article hit the presses.

The article from start to finish tries to undermine the holiness of the union between a man and woman. Miller quotes many religious figures who are obviously pushing their personal agendas rather than quoting scripture.  She even goes as far as saying that the Apostle Paul teaches marriage is only a last resort only for those who are unable to control their animal lust and uses that to envelop how the Bible views marriage. Miller has twisted Gods word to prove her point of view.  What I fear is that Christians will read her rhetoric and believe it because they don't have a firm grasp of scripture. I am not an expert by any means but I can see through this pitiful attempt at promoting gay marriage through the distortion of Biblical teachings. If someone is interested or has the time to tear this article apart and e-mail it to me I will gladly post it. I went to the Newsweek website to post on the articles blog and comment on this article and was not alone below are some other comments on the article.

Here lets see how we can twist these versus? I will pray for Lisa Miller and those who throw out the value and meaning of scripture. Leviticus 18-22 You shall not lie with mankind as you lie with womankind; it is an abomination. Leviticus 20-13 If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. Romans 1-26,27 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error. Corinthians 6-9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality will inherit the kingdom of God. Timothy 1-10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, Deuteronomy 23-17 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel nor a sodamite of the sons of Israel. I do however agree with Lisa Miller that if Jesus were here today he would not turn these homosexuals away but would accept them. And like so many times in the Bible these evil men and women like Saul before he was Paul would be awakened and see their evil ways and would change to follow Christ. We should all hope for this, to finally put an end to this perversion that has spread across our nation like a plague. For a real article check out this one "Proposition 8".

You are missing the serious issue. Its taking a holy sanctified religious union between a man and woman and making it mean nothing other than a bond between anyone whom loves one another. Heck bestiality is in the Bible why not let a man and his dog who love each other get married? After all who are we to get in the way of love? Wake up and don't be a puppet to those who try to stomp out Christianity! I don't care if you're Gay and you already have rights with civil unions so why attack a Christian fundamental? You can still be Gay and still go to Church and we will accept you. But please, trying to make a mockery out of scripture for your own self centered agenda, I think you need a wake up call. This is your problem, stop making it ours.

Politico reached out to conservative Christians, including Richard Land, who heads the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Liberty Commission. "It doesn't surprise me," he told Politico, "Newsweek has been so far in the tank on the homosexual issue for so long, they need scuba gear and breathing apparatus. I don't think [the piece] is going to change the minds of anyone who takes biblical teachings seriously.""
Ralph Reed, the former executive director of the Christian Coalition. "I see it as an attempt to caricature and reduce to a cartoon the social conservative belief in the efficacy of a traditional marriage, and try to reduce it to some formulaic, scriptural literalism," he said. "There's more of a practical, sociological foundation for why we seek to affirm marriage as an institution than I think is generally understood by those who want to legalize same-sex marriage."
Tim Graham, the Director of Media Analysis at the Media Research Center, accuses NEWSWEEK of saying, essentially: "Religious conservatives are troglodytes on the wrong side of history."
Mollie Hemingway on getreligion.org (which, it's worth noting, has this tag line: "the media... just doesn't get religion"). In her lengthy piece , Hemingway argues that NEWSWEEK'S biblical analysis is off-base. "If you are going to pretend that opposition to same-sex marriage is based Sola Scriptura, could we at least get our Scripture right?" she asks before introducing herself into the piece:

Now,as a member of a contemporary marriage, albeit one that isn’t so foolish as to think marriage is about gender equality or romantic love,I can honestly say that the Bible has been the only guide that has helped my husband and myself. We turn to it constantly to be reminded that the husband is to sacrifice for the wife and the wife is to respect the husband (these things don’t come naturally to either my husband or myself).

on the National Review's blog, Mark Hemingway says that Miller "can't even get through the first paragraph of her story without evincing an understanding of Christianity and its basic texts that is grossly oversimplified and distorted, filtered through an almost exclusively liberal political lens."

Albert Mohler, the ninth president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, argues in a lengthy response for the reproductive reasoning behind marriage: "At the center of this extended family stands the institution of marriage as the most basic human model of covenantal love and commitment, " he writes. "And this notion of marriage, deeply rooted in its procreative purpose, is unambiguously heterosexual
